Clean my speaker dust: the safe way, with a brush
"Clean my speaker dust" is a common search. The short answer: use a small, soft, dry brush, then play the tone to check the sound. Dust and lint can muffle the sound of a phone speaker. Dust and water are two common causes of poor speaker sound and low speaker clarity. This page shows how to clean it safely, from the grille. It uses phone maker guidance as the source.
Brush first: a sound or tone does not remove dust. Use a small, soft, dry brush. Then play the tone to check the sound.
Apple says to use a small, non-metallic, soft-bristled brush. Apple also says: do not use compressed air. General advice: clean the speaker without liquids. Sources: 1
How to clean a phone speaker step by step
- General advice: turn the phone off.
- Take off the case. Look at the grille and the microphone openings for debris. 1
- General advice: hold the phone with the speaker facing down, so loose dust can fall out.
- Brush gently across the speaker grille (some people call it the speaker grill) with a small, soft, dry brush. Apple says the brush must be clean, dry and non-metallic. General advice: do not push the bristles into the openings, so you do not damage speaker components. 1
- Earpiece mesh: wipe it without pressing hard. Xiaomi says to avoid pressing or rubbing hard. 2
- Wipe away the loosened debris with a microfiber cloth. Apple says to take extreme care near the microphone in the receiver opening. 1
- General advice: check that a case or a screen protector does not cover the speaker opening.
- General advice: turn the phone on. Then play the water eject tone to check the sound (see the next section).
After you clean your speaker: play the tone
When the grille is clean, play the water eject tone once and listen. Does the speaker sound clear again? If some water is also in the grille, the tone can push droplets out.
The brush does the cleaning. We found no test that shows a sound removes dust, so use the tone as a check, not as the cleaning step.
For a full test with a sweep and left and right channels, run the speaker check.
What you need
You need only a few items. Most homes have them.
- A small, soft-bristled, non-metallic brush. It must be clean and dry. Apple names this brush type.
- A microfiber cloth, to wipe away the loosened debris.
- General advice: good light, so that you can see the grille and the openings.

Earpiece or bottom speaker: what changes?
A phone has two main openings for sound. Clean each one with care.
The earpiece is the call speaker. It is the small slot at the top of the screen. Apple says to use extreme care near the microphone in the receiver opening. Xiaomi says that liquid can clog the dust-proof mesh of the earpiece. Xiaomi also says to avoid pressing or rubbing hard.
The bottom speaker grille is the row of holes at the base of the phone. General advice: hold the phone with the speaker facing down, and brush from side to side. Loose dust then falls out and does not go in.
General advice: a muffled call voice points to the earpiece. Muffled music or ringtone points to the bottom speaker. The speaker problem finder helps you choose.
Dust or water? How to tell
General advice: dust builds up slowly. The sound gets quieter or dull over weeks. Water is different. The sound often turns muffled right after the phone gets wet, and it can improve as the phone dries.
Apple says that water in the port might degrade speaker or microphone performance until it completely evaporates. If the phone got wet, treat it as water exposure first. Apple says: place your phone speaker side down on a lint-free cloth to see if water drips out. For water removal, Samsung says to use cool wind and to shake the device smoothly a few times, with the speaker face down. Dry it, and wait. Water can sit in the speaker mesh, and a brush does not remove it. Dust and moisture need different fixes. If you are not sure if the cause is water or dust, treat water first.
To get water from the speaker grille, use the water eject tone: a low tone can eject water droplets from the grille. It does not help with dust. In the dye test, water ejection cleared droplets from the grille only. Trapped water in the port stayed. The page about the water eject sound shows what the tests found.
Is there a sound to clean my speaker dust?
We found no evidence that a sound removes dust or lint from a speaker. Apple does not mention a sound for dust. Apple names a brush.
A speaker cleaner tool or a sound cleaning video may claim many sound frequencies. These claims give no data. Dust cleaning needs a brush. In July 2025, the fact-check site Dubawa rated a viral video that said a sound can clean a speaker as "Misleading". Apps and videos that offer a speaker cleaner sound, a dust mode or a cleaning sound give no data.
A low tone can push water droplets out of the grille. The Verge and iFixit saw this in a dye test. It does not dry the phone, and it is not a dust tool.
Our reading, not a measurement: a sound wave moves air in and out of the speaker. A high tone moves the speaker diaphragm very little. Dry dust particles stick to the mesh, and this small air movement does not remove them. Use a brush for dust.
For a wet speaker, see the water eject tone.
- Do not use compressed air. Apple says not to use it. 13
- Do not use cleaning products or liquids on an iPhone or any phone. Apple says to avoid moisture in the openings. General advice: liquid can push dirt into the speaker. 34
- Do not press or rub the earpiece mesh hard. Xiaomi gives this limit. 2
- Do not use pins, needles or other sharp objects. General advice: they can tear the mesh.
- Do not use heat. Samsung says to avoid heat when you dry a wet device. 6
Why is my phone speaker muffled after cleaning?
Dust is only one cause of a muffled speaker. Poor sound quality has other causes.
Water is a common cause. Apple says that water in the port might degrade speaker or microphone performance until it completely evaporates. Samsung says that water in the speakers can cause speaker and sound issues. Dry the phone in a dry area with airflow. Do not use heat.
General advice: check that a case or a screen protector does not cover the opening. Also check the volume, the Bluetooth link and the Do Not Disturb setting.
General advice: if the sound stays muffled after you brush the grille and dry the phone, ask a repair shop. Do not open the phone yourself. Apple says that liquid damage is not covered under warranty.
How to keep dust out of the speaker
General advice: lint from a pocket is a common source of dust in the openings. Speaker dust packs down over time, so brush the grille from time to time. Use the brush to clear dust before it builds up. Clean the inside of the case. Do not leave the phone in a dusty place.
Common speaker problems and their causes
A quiet or dull speaker has more than one possible cause. Check them in this order.
- Dust or debris on the grille. Clean it with a dry brush.
- Water or moisture. Dry the phone and wait. Do not use heat.
- A blocked opening. General advice: remove the case and the screen protector, and test again.
- A setting. General advice: check the volume, the output device and silent mode.
- A hardware fault. General advice: if the speaker issues stay after cleaning and drying, ask a repair shop.
iPhone and Android: what phone makers say about water damage and dust
iPhone: Apple says to check the iPhone speaker and microphone openings for debris, and to use a clean, dry brush. Apple says not to use compressed air. Apple also says that liquid damage is not covered under warranty.
Android: Xiaomi says that liquid can clog the dust-proof mesh of the earpiece, and that you should not press or rub hard. Samsung says to dry a wet device with a clean, soft cloth and to avoid heat. Google says to dry a wet Pixel with a soft cloth at room temperature.
Water damage is a different problem from dust. The tips on this page for dust do not repair a phone that was under water.
